For those doing First Aid as their service section.  Based on the Outdoor First Aid course but delivered over 12 weeks (one hour sessions) the course looks at a wide range of First Aid scenarios and equips a group with the emergency skills for an Expedition.

12 week course content:


Safety

Emergency environment risk assessment


Unconscious casualty

Common causes of unconsciousness

Diagnosis of an unconscious casualty

Treatment of a breathing unconscious casualty, the recovery position


Bleeding

Common causes of external bleeding

Treatment of external bleeding including foreign body in wound and nose bleeds

Common causes of internal injuries

Diagnosis of internal injuries

Treatment of internal injuries


Shock

Diagnosis of clinical shock in a casualty

Treatment for shock


Burns

Common cause of burns in both domestic and workplace environment

Diagnosis of burns

Treatment of burns including chemical burns


Chocking

Diagnosis of a choking casualty

Treatment of a choking casualty who remains conscious

Treatment of a choking casualty who becomes unconscious

Aftercare of choking casualties


Asthma Attack

Diagnosis of Asthma attack

Treatment of an Asthma attack casualty

Use of medication

When to call an ambulance


Poisoning

Commonly encountered poisons

The course includes handouts that summarise the above topics and include a list of First Aid items, a resuscitation wall-chart is also included.  Additionally candidates have the opportunity to purchase a First Aid manual with the course £6


Certificates awarded to successful candidates are valid for three years.
